Colostomy takedown


        The colostomy is the most common Stoma. A colostomy (Greek colon = large intestine, stoma = mouth opening) is defined as the artificial recovery of the colon to the skin surface.

When a colostomy is needed?

        Basically, a colostomy is needed if the large intestine tract is a serious disease and certain sections of the intestine have to be shut down temporarily or permanently, or removed.

Reasons for colostomy include:

  • Chronic inflammatory diseases of the colon (eg ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease)
  • Tumors in the colon
  • Diverticulum (diverticula) in the colon that can become inflamed
  • Breakthrough colon (perforation)
  • Insufficient sphincter function (control of the bowel is no longer available)
  • Injuries
  • Damage caused by radiation therapy
  • Congenital malformation of the intestine (eg Hirschsprung's disease)
