Colostomy reversal

Colostomy is a surgical procedure of creating an artificial opening between the colon and abdomen (artificial anus). Colostomy is a surgical opening through which a small portion of the colon is removed. This opening, called stoma, allows stool to be evacuated directly outside the body without passing through the damaged part of the colon. After a colostomy, feces pass through the stoma, the opening on the abdomen, and are collected in a pocket.

The colostomy may be temporary or permanent. The loss of voluntary control of the intestine requires a lot of attention to the consistency and frequency of stools of the colostomy. Indeed, it may vary depending on the portion of the bowel where the colostomy is performed.

Leading causes of placement of a right colostomy:

  • The right ineradicable colon cancer or occlusion.
  • Significant wounds to the colon.
  • The colon volvulus with dilatation.

For left colostomy:

  • Colorectal cancers: they are cancers of the colon, rectum, anus.
  • Infectious diseases, inflammation of the colon and rectum, colonic diverticulitis, perforation, obstruction, massive hemorrhage, colitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease with colonic localization, chronic inflammation.
  • Other causes: laid to rest, the colon and rectal fistulas, trauma (involving, as it punctures), post-radiation proctitis, colitis or necrotizing ischemic endometriosis of the rectum and rectosigmoid hinge, diseases like imperforate anus, congenital mega colon or Hirschsprung disease, sigmoid volvulus, division of the spinal cord.
