Colostomy complications

If the surgeon removed a part of the right colon, the patient may have a problem of loose stools for a few months. This has two reasons: the valve between the small intestine and colon that had a moderating effect on the stool was removed and reabsorption of water by the right colon, can not be done. If the tumor is placed on the rectum, the colon is connected to the anus. This concern will normally improve with time. The colon will increasingly serve as a reservoir and will increase volume.

If the transaction involves the left colon or transverse, the transit is not altered. If all goes as expected under laparoscopy, the patient usually comes out 4 days after surgery. If the operation could not be done by laparoscopy, requiring a standard intervention, it takes 8 to 10 days of hospitalization.

Colostomy complications - Need for "artificial anus"

In some cases, the surgeon should consider a colostomy also called "insertion of an artificial anus" (abuse of language because it has nothing to do with the anus). The colon will be into touch and sutured to the wall of the stomach.

Colostomy complications -Under what circumstances?

  • When the tumor is located very near the anus, without enough space for suturing the colon to the rectum remaining, the surgeon makes a colostomy on the abdominal wall (usually the left).
  • This can also be performed during an operation conducted in emergency: if the tumor causes a bowel obstruction and the status of the colon can not do sutures in good conditions.
  • Finally, this solution can be proposed after an initial intervention in cases of rare complications where there are problems with sutures on the colon (with loss of bowel leakage).

How does it happen?

Intestinal transit is "derivative" to a pocket that is "glued" to the skin. Specifically, it is a kind of small appliances bonded to the skin, which will be fixed like a tightly pocket - replaced periodically. This equipment may be temporary or permanent depending on each.

Colostomy complications and after

A nurse or stoma patient learns to use with it. In the long term, the colostomy is not a severe handicap. Advances in equipment and techniques make this problem quite bearable. There are only strict hygiene measures to be taken. Many people live with it.
